Continue Building Success Habits

You’ve heard quite a bit about building your business in 90 day chunks. It seems to be the buzz around these days. Don’t get me wrong here – it works! But that is not the end of it.

If you have taken all that time to build a business and the habits that go with it, why would you not continue? To think that you can take an extended hiatus is a mistake – there is maintenance involved.
The great thing is that, if you have put in a serious push and got some traction from the momentum, it takes less effort to continue progressing, but moving forward is still a must.
This is the stage at which you have the time to attend to the tweaks that you were too busy to deal with in the initial stages, but which will make a significant difference to your business. Don’t be tempted to take an extended “well deserved rest”.
Your gains will simply melt away like ice cream in hot sun.

After the initial push has been done, you can slow down the pace and look around a bit more, but you are still riding the horse at a canter, not stopping entirely. The distance you gained with the initial gallop means you have less ground to cover to your destination. If you stop for a while, the horse may be disinclined to continue – it found a great field of grass it prefers to graze on, and throws you when you decide to get back in the saddle – ouch!!
Keep riding!

Are YOU Pushing Away Success?

You’ve set those goals, made a vision board, say positive affirmations all the time and started to take action, yet you are not getting anywhere, even though you feel you are doing the right things.

You’ve talked to your advisors and everyone else, and they reassure you that you are on the right path, you are doing things the correct way. What gives?

Limiting beliefs are your unconscious mind at work – and lead you away from your desired goals. Here is how I dealt with one of mine.
I had started trading financial instruments – forex mainly, but also options and commodities. I attended several great courses & seminars and was pretty knowledgeable about the markets but was still not getting great results. Then one day, I was asked what a successful trader looked like. Wouldn’t you know it – I pictured some male in a suit! Ahhhh! So, reframing time.

I held the thought of a successful trader in my mind, and headed to a mirror and looked very carefully at myself to see if I could see the 2 images (in my mind and that in the mirror) as the same thing – a successful trader. It took a few tries, but I did it! When you mention a successful trader, I now see myself as one, and my trading has improved dramatically.

Whatever you want to be or do, you have to see yourself in that space, or it really won’t happen, and nobody else will see you as one either. Your subconscious is communicating your lack of belief in yourself all over the place!

Athletes use reframing a lot, and when you talk to really successful people, they have a huge belief in their abilities to get to where they are again even if they were to start over. They have done away with the limiting beliefs related to success.
Time to be aware and take steps to get rid of your limiting beliefs and SOAR!

Newton and Success

Sir Isaac Newton, he of the apple and gravity fame knew a thing or two about how things work.
Do you remember what the first and second laws of motion are?

And how does that feature in your everyday life and journey to success?

You know what it’s like – I am watching a great show on TV or movie – I don’t feel like getting up and doing anything else, like my daily walk, before the show is over. This is due to inherent INERTIA. The longer I am seated there, the less I feel like getting up – I’m comfortable!

On the other hand, when I am energetic and on the move, I tend to want to stay that way. Energy begets energy – I feel I am in the “flow” as a lot of athletes put it. It is a peak state, which is also quite effortless. I also get that feeling when driving – on a long stretch, it begins to feel quite effortless and pleasurable – I could keep going forever.
When I start my daily walk, there is a time – about 25 mins in, when it no longer feels like work, and I can keep going for quite a while (I am not a natural athlete!). I love it then. If I stopped, then I have to go through all that feeling of work and effort to get to the 25 min point! I’m sure there are things for you that feel the same.

You can apply this to just about anything you start – you need a lot of resources (time, energy, money etc) to overcome the inertia of where you are. It takes a while, and things often seem to be very slow. After a while, you start getting in the flow and things start to happen – the more they happen, the more progress you are making, and it doesn’t seem to take as much effort as it did in the beginning – you are now in orbit.
That is a great feeling: it is important to realize that you do have to get past the initial inertia, and bumps in the road to get to where you want to be. And, if you apply more force (resources) to the object (project, service, product), it accelerates! You get to the destination that much faster! How cool is that!

Have You Thought About Your Core Values?

There are core values for people as well as businesses. Defining your core values gives you a purpose to focus on, otherwise you are subject to external pressures and opinions – your life and organization is then defined by outside forces.

Your core values are like a calling card. They are a predictor of your behaviour, and inevitably, your success. They are also an internal guide & compass, so you know when you are going in a different direction and can correct it. When you make decisions based on those core values, it gives you further confidence in that the decision is the right one for you and your business.
It also makes the decision making process easier – if the choice agrees with your core value, you can safely accept it, compared to if it does not, in which case, you reject it.

Individuals and organizations have core values (or vision statements) Try looking at Zappos. Their core values make them the organisation they are. The core values of Apple must surely include innovation.

In life and also in business, it is important that you keep your word. I call that honour. When you give your word,  you ought to take it seriously and not give it out all over the place. It loses any value. Once you have committed to something (or someone), make it a non-negotiable that you will do anything possible to keep that commitment. You will earn respect and your reputation will precede you. Think how much easier and straightforward things would be?

What are your core values? What is really important to you? I’d love to know.

Which Comes First – Marketing or Networking?

For the eager network marketers out there, this is comprised of two parts.

The really new person wants to start bringing in some money fast, and may end up putting the cart before the horse in their haste.

Which is the cart and which is the horse here?

Always remember that we are all human, and behave accordingly. You do the same, so will your client. It’s the way we interact and that will not change. We do it all the time – we tend to patronize places and people we like and trust, who we feel can also help us.

I’m off to my hairdresser tomorrow – fantastic guy. The first time I went to him, I did only a regular cut and styling. The next time, since I went back, meaning I was comfortable with him and his work, we did a drastic change to my style – we then added highlights and some products to take care of the whole thing – a much larger bill than I was used to getting, but guess what? I loved it!! If he had laid that on me from the get-go, I probably would have balked, even if I thought it would be a good thing.  And I’d never get my hair styled by a well-meaning friend!

Whether you have an offline or online business, make your focus your client – get to know them, what problems they need solving and how you can help – the rest will fall into place.

Who is your competition?

We are taught to compete from a very young age, however, it is often focussed on other people.
The focus belongs elsewhere, especially if you want to develop high standards and excellence in your chosen field or business.

The only person you can do anything about is YOU!
If you want to reach a high standard, set targets for yourself, higher each time. That is how to get better, not by comparing yourself to other people.

Excellence is a result of Self Discipline and raising your own standards , NOT through being in competition with others.

When you put that into practise in your business like that, you’ll stand out – you are not focused on negative tactics against other people in your field. You are focused on your own efforts moving you forward.
Steve Jobs was focused on making Apple products the best they could be, even when it seemed a pipe dream to his closest advisers. He was focussing on things like the fonts in documents, at a time when other manufactures were focused on churning out PC’s with little added value. He got fired from his own company before he came back later when it was recognized that, even when they had low market share, their products were distinctive and appealed to those who valued a certain quality in computers and software. They are now the largest publicly traded company by market capitalization in the world! Larger than Google and Microsoft combined! Who would have guessed that 10 years ago?
Athletes hone their skills by focused practice on their own – kicking that ball further, hitting the bullseye and more often, throwing the javelin further, running faster than the last time: that is against themselves first before they move into more formal arenas.

Start by raising your own standards – it really is the only way to Excellence!

Teamwork = Success

None of us is an island – we cannot and do not achieve anything all on our own. The so-called self-made people are never that – it simply is not possible!

There must have been someone doing something that he/she was not doing. Even if the concept or the core work was your idea, it is a disservice to your team not to acknowledge them. Selfishness is not an attractive quality in a real leader. If you are selfish, the people supporting your activities are not happy, and will leave at the first opportunity.

My team consists of everyone who plays a role in my various activities – family, friends, acquaintances, accountant, bookkeeper, strategist, coaches etc. I call myself chief visionary and bottle-washer in one of my businesses.

In a hospital, our team is comprised of the staff – technologists, nurses and administrative staff mainly, but also porters (try examining a patient in 30 mins who is in ICU – how are they going to get to me?), catering and housekeeping staff – yes, we have lots of “stuff” in hospitals that need cleaning and clearing away.

I am grateful to be able to say I love what I do, and that is due in a large part to colleagues and team members. Even though it is not expected, when we get compliments from our patients, it gives such a high, there are few things better! I wish everyone got highs on what they do for work – I’ve been on a work high for years.

I am always telling people that, while I love my travel and holidays, I am quite eager to get back to the hospital. There I use my skills to help people become healthier and more comfortable, provide answers and let them have a more pleasant experience than they’d imagined. I can’t do all that on my own – I am fortunate enough to have always work with a great team.

Work Smart….. How?

You hear it all the time: you need to Work Smart. Great catchphrase, but it should be a lot more than that.

Though most have heard it, they don’t really know how to go about it!
Would you know where to begin working smart?

Realize working harder is not the answer – you generally will not get paid twice as much for working twice as hard – even if there were enough hours in the day!
For example, If you get paid $50 per hour for an 8 hr day, you are unlikely be able to work 16 hours straight daily, even if you will end up doubling your pay. With other activities of daily living, people are barely able to do much more than 8 hrs a day, especially with commutes of up to 2 hrs each way. You’d better make a bed at work and sleep there, in that case!

Donald Trump certainly does not work a thousand times as hard as you do even though he is maybe a thousand percent richer at the very least. Think about it – the book by Napoleon Hill is titled “Think and Grow Rich”, not Work Hard and Grow Rich. It is estimated to have made a million millionaires. Hint: If you haven’t done so yet, go and buy a copy ($12) and read it.

Working smart requires you to be creative and efficient. Getting a team is also a great way to work smart, as is of course delegation and outsourcing.

I will get a coach all the time when I can – that propels me faster to where I want to be – I achieve results much faster than slogging it on my own, going through every nuance. I’m doing that very thing as we speak with my online business, and I’m getting great results!

Work Smart – it’s the only way, really.

Procrastination Costs!

Pay close attention to what indecision & procrastination does in your life. It leaves you unsettled, with a feeling of being surrounded by chaos.
Procrastinating also usually means that you have several other things that you have put “on hold”, all of which shuts down your brain and willingness to do anything useful, so your productivity goes to zero!

What does procrastination and indecision look like?
For me, it’s like a really untidy closet – you don’t really like looking at it, so when you need something in it, you dash in there, dig around to retrieve something – at this stage, anything serviceable will do, even though you know there is better inside that pile, and close the doors. Anything to stop looking at the mess. You’ve just shortchanged yourself – things would have been better if I could find that great shirt, shoe and dress!

I usually find that when I don’t resolve my list, everything else is on hold, including important time sensitive decisions – my mind is now filled with so much, it needs clearing before it can continue to function properly.

How do I get out of that state? I start by picking one item to tackle – the easiest is fine.
Then it’s time to MAKE A DECISION one way or the other, one that settles the matter.
With the success of that initial decision, the tendency is to move on to the next item on the list feeling lighter and clear headed, and so on.

Your ability to be creative, to be inspired REQUIRES a calm mind.

Maintaining Your Personal Connections is Savvy Business!

In all the activity of our work and businesses, we often get so carried away with deadlines and just “things” that we forget to connect to people & pets nearest and dearest to us.

It is our connections with other people that keeps most of us going – and we tend to neglect them when crunch time comes. We ASSUME that they know we like and love them.
As humans, we want to know we matter to those we care for, and it is no different with those close to you.
Keeping those connections with a bit of forethought is much easier than dealing with the fallout of not doing so. And these are people in your corner, which brings some calm to your life. That allows you to better weather the challenges that are inevitable in business.
