Create Your OWN Life!

Are you subconsciously giving away the power to be the architect of your own life and success?
If you do not consciously decide to create your life, it will be crafted by someone else.
From Jim Rohn:
If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.

The reptilian part of our brain (in the region of the base of the skull) still thinks we are are early in the evolutionary process – its chief function is to protect us. That means not taking chances, keeping things the way they are, keeping us comfortable. Our higher brain, which is further along in evolution, requires much more – that we live life to the fullest. Not just to survive, but thrive: live, love, enjoy it all!
We are in a constant battle against our survival mode brain – which is where keeping things the way they are comes from. But if we don’t step out of that comfort zone, we don’t achieve anything – we’ll go the way of the dinosaur – extinct from not adapting and pushing frontiers.

Realize when you have an inspiration, your subconscious may be presenting you with an opportunity – wait a few seconds and your reptilian brain steps in to quash the idea – to hard, too far, too tedious, too expensive or whatever else it can come up with. If you are alert to this, DO SOMETHING within the first few seconds of an idea to keep things moving – write it down, and a time by which you will start. The planning comes later.

Planning For Success

If you are planning for success, by now you must have read fairly extensively that you need a goal to aim for – also called your WHY.
If you don’t have a big goal, start right away by writing down what you want. Be like a kid with no barriers, and come up with 100 different ones. Put them into one of these different timeframes: short, medium and long term.
Short term is up to 6 months, Medium term is up to 24 months and long term is up to 5 years.
To also help you, think of various categories for your goals – business and work, health, finances, spiritual, relationships & charity.
Now whittle the list down to the 5 most important in each timeframe. From this list of 5, bring it down to the most important in each time frame. You may find they are linked or not, but each goal will be of great importance to you.

At the end of the exercise, you will have a big juicy goal, which is usually the long term goal.
Now you have a goal, draw up a plan of action towards it and start DOING! Without action, your goal remains a dream.
Your goal(s) must be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely (have a time limit). By simply doing the exercise with these steps, you will have something to work with.

Don’t play safe by having an easily attainable goal – let it stretch you – it should both excite and scare you at the same time. And if you add a touch of pain (your goal is moving away from a situation you would rather not be in, even better!

Share your goals with as many people as you can – once you put it out there, you have no choice but to get on with it. You’ve made a commitment!

One of my goals is to “go big or go home” online – I’m building my online presence and involved in online marketing and success coaching.
How are you planning for success? I’d love to hear about your goals – leave them in the comments below.

How To Be A Successful Leader

This is the last of the mini-series of 4 videos on Leadership.
In this one, let’s touch on the causes of failure in Leadership. Most people work backwards: they know they don’t want rather than what they want, so we are applying the same to Leadership.
When is a leader not a leader – what causes Leadership Failure?

Competition is a biggie: In an abundant world, competition can bring you down if it is aimed at other people.
Listen to what Sara Blakely, Spanx founder and the youngest female billionaire says:
“I have only been focused on my own quality – what can I offer that’s the best and give value.”

When your aim is to give & do your very best, you will be amply rewarded.

Leadership Qualities 3

In the third of this 4 part series on Leadership, I touch on more skills. Important skills that are integral and found in all successful leaders.
There are natural-born leaders, and there are also leaders who have successfully acquired leadership skills. By highlighting them, if you feel you are not a natural leader, you can most certainly develop into one.

Do remember that these qualities are of no real use separately – it’s a bit like a soup – best enjoyed with all the ingredients in the same bowl, not salt in one bowl, water in a separate bowl and veggies in yet another – you can’t possibly sample them separately and know how the soup will taste.

Leadership Qualities 2

Continuing on with leadership qualities, I share my thoughts with you, with guidance from Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich”. If you have not read it yet, please get a copy and start reading. You’ll thank me.

As a leader, the ability to delegate is an important prerequisite – both for your sanity and that of your team. If you are a micromanager, rethink that strategy – it does not work long term and does not inspire your team to give their best. There are also common sense reasons to delegate!

As the leader, do you have a firm aim/goal? You need a road map for you AND your team!

How are you doing? I’d love to hear from you.

Leadership Qualities 1

While a lot of people feel that leaders are born, there is certainly a lot of evidence that you can BECOME a leader.

A true leader has certain attributes that will be found in all leaders. Without them, forget about calling yourself a leader. Some self-styled leaders do not actually make the grade – for them, it is more a position they graduate to within a heirachical system rather than one which they grew into. It never does take very long to find out they are not leadership material, so do not get or deserve the respect given to a leader.

I’m discussing LEADERSHIP SKILLS over a short series of 4 videos. Listen and find out if you have many or all the necessary leadership qualities. If you don’t, you can always work on them. Like any skill, it can be acquired.

What Makes You A Leader?

What do you see when you see someone on a stage, giving a talk, being the centre of the room etc? Look beyond the person, and look at the aura around them.
If you are mesmerized by the person and their appearance for any length of time, there is a good reason why.

You can cultivate that energy – something that attracts people to you, what you say and do. You are not going to find a lacklustre leader – simply too blah!!!

If you don’t feel that you have that much energy, try spicing things up a bit – it may take you out of your comfort zone, but with all the attention you’ll now be getting, you’ll be motivated to get even more energetic!
High energy attracts people – it really is that simple, so if you will be speaking in public in any capacity, you need to have enough energy to captivate your audience and keep them following you.

I as at Live The Dream 3 last weekend – one of the presenters was Jonathan Budd – someone with really great energy. I went up to him (I am registered for his upcoming Unstoppable Millionaire 2 event) to get a picture with him. Want to know the first thing he said to me? “You have such great energy”!

What You Focus on Persists

Do you realize that you have a lot of control over your thoughts? You only really see what you are looking for and thinking about. If you are not thinking about it, it will not come to you. And if you are only thinking of lack and hardship, is it any surprise that is what surrounds you?

Like Roger Bannister, if you focus on what you want, you are more likely to attract the opportunities that enable your goal to come to fruition. Of course you need to act on it, but your subconscious is already acting like a magnet for the opportunities to come your way.

Think about this: you say – “I knew it was going to rain, that flight was going to be cancelled, that car was going to skip 6 lanes of traffic and hit you” – take your pick, but you get the gist.
Most call it hindsight, but it is really foresight – you wished it on yourself.

Lets reframe things and EXPECT good things – your subconscious will do the rest, and you will recognize the opportunities much faster and easier because you are already primed to do so.

As a follow up, I now have a choice of contacts to move things forward – yay!!! That is all I expected!
Let me know how that goes for you. I have far more fun expecting the good things.

Discipline and Instant Gratification

One of the success principles is discipline. Without it, you will struggle to get anywhere.
Look at it this way – it makes life better on the long run. Sure, before you develop the habit, it looks like it is a pain, but once you do, things begin to feel a lot easier.

You want to become that successful athlete, actor, business person or parent? You need to be disciplined.

As I shared, I do know better, and am generally disciplined and keep away from dairy products. So, I pass some lovely cheese, and decided to have a taste – the reaction was pretty quick, so the pleasure of eating the cheese was quite quickly lost when the itching and lack of sleep descended.
A good reminder to continue my disciple – I’m much better for it.

This happens to us in all kinds of ways – when we give up our disciplined habits, it because of some instant pleasure. Is it worth it? Not usually. Which is a good thing, because there is a stronger incentive to get back to the disciplined behaviour that is vital to our health and success  in whatever goal we have.

So, when you have a lapse, watch out for the reaction, and get back to your disciplined habits – you’ll be glad you did.

Pain And Achieving Success

As humans, we react strongly by moving away from pain, or towards pleasure. As we’ve found out, we tend to react more to pain than to pleasure. Imagine what happens when there is a forest fire at your back.
You’d run much faster, with your life in danger, than you’d chase after that Ferrari or whatever lovely toy you really, really wanted, if the price of getting it was to run a 4 minute mile!
It’s how people can lift a car off a loved one when danger threatens. We actually all have it, and can tap into it to succeed in our goals.

I’m just back from Live The Dream 3 in Dallas, Texas (did you know they were a country before seceding from Mexico?) There were many wonderful leaders and speakers there  and the energy was HIGH! I’m still on it.

One thing that the vast majority of them talked about was the importance of PERSISTENCE in achieving your goals.
You’ve got to really GO ALL OUT, do EVERYTHING you can think of, and then some. If current circumstances are painful enough, and you want things to change badly enough, you’ll get moving.

Talk to the successful people you know – get them to tell you their story of how they got to where they are, and what inspired them and kept them going, even when they had huge obstacles – they all do…. and get inspired!
You don’t need to hit rock bottom, but you can call on the future pain that will be due to the consequences of staying where you are (in reality sliding backwards) to get you determined not to head into a black hole. Establish the floor there and head up. It’s worth it!

Oh yes, Mac did get moving a few days later and now is back to jimmying the door open as slickly as before. He decided he did not want to keep waiting for me to open the door for him 10 mins after he is wants to get out. His persistence paid off.

And, apologies for the sound quality! The message is worth it, though!
